Authority is the issue here. It always is when dealing with the demonic. Who's the boss? When I sit at the head of the table and make the devil take an alternate seat, I win. When I let him get the prime place, he wins. James said that if we resist the devil he'll flee from us. We resist him by taking charge of our lives, filling them with God and the godly, and placing on the front door of our being a flashing neon sign that unequivocally announces to our satonic tempter, "No vacancy!"
C. S. Lewis gives it to us allegorically in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. "A few minutes later the Witch herself walked out on the top of the hill and came straight across and stood before Asian. The three children, who had not seen her before, felt shudders running down their backs at the sight of her face; and there were low growls among all the animals present
It was the oddest thing to see those two faces -- the golden face and the dead-white face -- so close together. Not that the Witch looked Asian exactly in his eyes; Mrs. Beaver particularly noticed this."
Mrs. Beaver was correct. The devil cannot look God in the eye and us neither when God is in us.
