In this beautiful prayer of dedication we are able to catch a glimpse of what God is like for the wise King Solomon, but have you ever wondered what God is like in the mind of a six-year-old? This is the question Deborah Pearce pursued in an article for Teacher magazine titled "What's God Like When You're Six?"
As a Sunday school teacher of first graders, Deborah conducted an informal interview with 15 children. She asked them, "If God were to spend an afternoon with us, what do you think God would be like?"
Two-thirds of the children used one or more of the following words to describe God: loving, caring, sharing, forgiving, nice and friendly. Five children said, "God would be like Jesus." One little girl described God as "someone who would have very long arms." When asked why she thought this she answered, "So he could put them around the whole world to keep everybody safe."
One boy answered, "God would take care of you if you didn't have parents." One girl stated, "God would be like my cousin. My cousin is a lot of fun." Finally, one particularly insightful young man said, "God would be anything God wanted to be. God could be a fish; God could be water. God could be air; God could be a man or a woman. But God would especially be like my grandma who is up in heaven. Everyone loved my grandma because she was loving and liked everyone."
