The bridegroom said to his new wife at the wedding reception, "I am so happy that I feel like dancing!" In our text we find another individual that was very happy -- King David. He was so happy that he danced. We are also told the source of his joy: the bringing of the ark to Jerusalem.
But not everyone shared David's joy. His wife was not happy with his behavior. We are not told if she was unhappy over the reason he celebrated or the way he celebrated. I tend to think that she didn't approve of the way he celebrated. She did not think that this was the way a king should behave, dancing in public.
We should be careful how we celebrate. It happened in 1991, again in 1992 and 1993; Chicago was racked by violence after the Chicago Bulls won their third NBA title: nearly 700 arrests, scattered looting and three deaths. Along with sporadic violence in Dallas after the Cowboys won the Super Bowls and the destruction in Montreal after the Canadian's Stanley Cup victory, you sense an alarming trend. Many celebrate by creating mayhem.
We should celebrate God's goodness. So many see what is wrong with the world. Can you see God at work in the world? Can you see God's goodness? It is proper for us to praise God! It is good to dance and rejoice as David did. But we must do more than celebrate. Let us remember why we are to celebrate, and let our joy be wisely expressed.
