A brilliant young couple received as their second child an infant daughter with Down's syndrome. Whatever feelings they may have had, they shared with just a few close friends and with their pastor. Beyond this, their deepest thoughts remained tucked within. Everyone could see they rejoiced in this second child as much as the first. Family outings were outings of four, not three. Special events in the life of the younger child were, as they should be, special events for all. As for words of her condition, however, they spoke almost none. This sprang not from any desire to deny the situation. They simply were private people and quietness was a natural part of their response.
By the time they approached middle age, though, the couple found themselves saying what so many others walking the same path have said, "Janie is such a special gift to us. Her sense of life is so immediate. Her love is so direct. Her wisdom constantly moves on levels deeper than our own. All we can do is try to learn from her."
