Charles was a workaholic, a slave to his job. The only physical exercise he got was walking to his garage in the morning and to the parking lot late at night. Often on weekends, he was called to attend to some emergency at work. If his wife, Maryanne, needed to talk to him, she had to phone him at work or wait up late for him to arrive home. The worst part of all this for her was that he completely ignored their church and hadn't attended for years.
One hot summer day, Maryanne received a phone call. Charles had collapsed at work and had been taken to the hospital. After she arrived there, the doctor came to speak with her. After explaining to her that her husband had experienced a major heart attack and that his blood sugar was off the chart, he told her that his chances of survival were slim at this point. No visitors would be allowed. Maryanne sat by his side for several days before he opened his eyes. He wanted to know what had happened. After she related what the doctor had told her, he asked her to phone his office so he could catch up on work.
By that time, Maryanne had had enough! She told him that slavery to the company had put him where he was and she had no intention of calling his office! Before she left, she gave orders to all the staff they were to make no phone calls for him to anyone except her or his doctor. She asked her pastor that night to call on Charles. The next morning, Charles told her, "You are right. Death has come too close to this family. Now we need to prepare for a new life."
