A children's choir director was recently relating her experience with the children in her junior choir. It was the second week of December and she was rehearsing with the boys and girls in what she thought would be the final rehearsal for the children's Christmas program.
The director said that she was almost exhausted, and the children were tired after they had worked on the songs for more than half an hour. She was about to lose patience with them. They were singing on pitch, and the parts were coming through, but the music lacked something. The children sang as though it was something they had to do, rather than singing in the spirit of rejoicing. Their singing lacked the "spirit of Christmas."
Suddenly, she stopped the singing and walked over to the decorated Christmas tree. As she picked off one of the ornaments, she said: "See this ornament. It glistens when the light strikes it. That is its purpose on the tree. We can sing all our parts right, and know all the words, but none of these show love - which is the true message of Christmas. This love must shine in our eyes and brighten our faces. You are God's ornaments. Come on, let your faces shine, and sing with the spirit of rejoicing."
