A coach once asked for an explanation of the difference between power and authority. Obviously he was trying to work at getting his team organized and well disciplined in order to work effectively as a team. One man suggested the following. Power is when the coach insists on something because the coach says so. Authority is instruction and insistence on something that is directly related to the nature and demands of the game. If the coach uses power then power is diminished. If the coach uses authority then authority is augmented; athletes will learn to trust. So with Christ. We are no longer compelled as if by a disciplinarian concerned with his own power. We have a legitimate authority of the One who speaks to us about the true nature of life.
