Daniel is a tract for hard times written to comfort and strengthen the community of faith in a time of severe persecution. It is imperative that the pulpit deal with Daniel and all apocalyptic scripture in a scholarly and thoughtful way. We have witnessed in Waco, Texas, the nightmarish turns the misuse of scripture can take. The July 13, 1993, issue of USA Today contains an article reporting how some see the floods rampaging through the midwest as a sign of approaching doom and they buttress their predictions with citations from the Bible. One conclusion drawn in the article is that as we approach the year 2000 we are going to see a millennium madness. So the misuse of scripture persists and the grand proclamation of a virile faith and hope enshrined in books like Daniel is missed completely. -- Kolsti
