Dean Frederick Farrar was a personal friend of Queen Victoria, and he tells of a conversation he once had with the English monarch. She had heard one of her chaplains preach a sermon on the return of Christ. She said to her friend, "Oh, Dean Farrar, how I wish the Lord would come during my lifetime!" When he asked her why, with deep emotion she said, "Because I would love to lay my crown down at his blessed feet in reverent adoration!"
Today we also need to look expectantly for the second coming as did Queen Victoria. During the days of waiting we need to praise him for all he has done for us. We need to reaffirm our belief that he will gather the faithful to him and we will see him face to face.
On this first Sunday of Advent, we need to realize the longing of the people of Israel for the first coming of the Christ. We know something of their feel of anticipation during the many years of waiting, and the temptation to compromise our faith if the event does not occur in our lifetime.
