Despite being a prisoner of Rome, Paul was free to proclaim the true gospel of the risen Lord. In the midst of suffering, Paul found triumph through his faith in Christ. One of the most famous French saints is Joan of Arc. Famed actresses such as Ingrid Bergman have portrayed her on the silver screen and playwrights as renowned as George Bernard Shaw have immortalized her in great plays. She stands for all of us as an example of the power of the gospel to sustain a suffering person in times of great trial and martyrdom. Following her betrayal by those she had befriended and defended, young Joan was sentenced to be burned at the stake. As the young girl was being engulfed by the flames, bystanders heard her cry out, "My voices were from God, they did not deceive me!" Joan followed the gospel road, trusting to the Lord who had spoken to her in powerful visions. Like Paul, she was persuaded that in a world of cheap religion and seductive sirens of power and self, only faith in Jesus Christ can lead beyond this life of suffering into the realm of the Holy Spirit of God's eternal kingdom.
