The difference between those who...

The difference between those who are able to effect healing in the world and those who are not is found in the principal of Christ; Life is gained only when one gives it away. Charlie had suffered the loss of a business and a failed marriage, yet out of the ashes of those griefs there arose more than twenty years of service. About the time life was falling apart for him he had been participating in the leadership of a summer camp for Down Syndrome children. He so hated the idea of seeing them returned to a state institution where their development had been neglected that he took one and then another into foster care, until at last he was providing a home, training and love for six children, sometimes with no state support whatsoever.
His advocacy for them led to a successful campaign for the state senate where he was able to effectively change the way agencies dealt with foster families. The loss of free time and the financial and emotional costs were high. But Charlie will tell you real healing occurred. Most of the people he cared for, once unable to even feed themselves because of neglect and society's prejudice, became more self-sufficient. And incidentally, Charlie, too, was healed of the tragedies which had beset him.
