The disciples were charged to take nothing for their journey except a staff. This seems like a rather unusual way to go forth into the world. But the message is clear: do not be weighed down by the extras. Travel lightly. Just do the work of witnessing.
A local group of Jehovah's Witnesses recently erected a "kingdom hall" in seventy-two hours! Several hundred volunteers gathered from early in the morning until late at night digging, pouring, pounding, and completing a new building.
The news media was interested, and asked one of the laborers at the site why they were in such a hurry to get the building erected. The laborer answered, "Our job is to witness. We didn't want this building to take up too much of our time and energy. We figured that if we could get it completed, then we would not be sidetracked."
How many Christian churches get sidetracked with all the extras and never get down to the essentials? Certainly witnessing is one such essential!
