During his high school years, my eldest son was a cross-country runner. He told me that it was always hard, and quite painful to begin his practice running as each athletic season came around. He always thought about giving up, but he kept at it. He found that his leg muscles became stronger with each week of practice and it was easier to run long distances.
My son soon settled into a pace that offered very little strain. However, he noticed that his race times were not becoming any better, but seemed to remain at a certain level. As he pondered this, he realized that he had stopped growing in his running ability because he had become contented with what he had achieved.
We cannot be content with our level of spirituality in the Christian faith. We must continue to grow as we take upon ourselves certain spiritual disciplines. Each one of us needs to strive to become spiritually mature.
