During the sixties a group of us were attending a session of the Ecumenical Institute in New Haven. On Sunday we went to hear William Sloane Coffin preach at the Yale Chapel. On the front row of the side pews near the chancel we noted a line of patrician-looking ladies. When Coffin arrived he greeted each one personally and we could not help but observe how adoringly they looked at him. One of our members whispered down the row to us, "Thank God for little old ladies."
Every prophet knows the value of such support. Elisha who instantly had some political clout asked the woman of Shunem if she needed a favor. He wanted to repay her in some way for her support. To make Elisha-like promises is beyond us, but prayers of thanks to the King we all serve are in order for all those who receive prophets.
