Every year, Tony would bring his family to the annual Veterans of Foreign Wars dinner
at the local hall in town to have a meal. It would be a de facto reunion with some
of his friends from the armed forces as they fought in a war together. The war was a
bloody, bitter experience that they would not want to repeat. But the meal was a reminder
that quite often people and nations have to make hard choices when it comes to defending
themselves.
This is sort of what Purim reminds the community of the faithful exiled Jews who lived in exile in Persia. They have a good life, but it was not without a price of struggle, sacrifice, violence, and blood.
