Everyone knew Gary. He drove the newest and biggest car, had the most powerful tractor and combine, and lived in the biggest house, and his kids had the most expensive toys. It was generally assumed, in that small rural community, that Gary and his family were living off the proceeds from a large estate -- farming certainly wasn't that profitable. Indeed, Gary encouraged that view. He loved to be the center of attention. Some of the town's older denizens cautioned, however, "Those who have money, don't splash it around." Imagine the shock waves that rocked the community when one morning, Gary and his family were gone. They had packed up under the cover of darkness and fled. It seems that they had been living well beyond their means, and the banks were calling in all their loans. In the matter of faith, Jesus advises a much more quiet way of life.
