On February 28, 1917, a fire swept through the Crystal Theater in Ottawa, Kansas.
Around 9 p.m., as the second show was just about to begin, the audience heard a pop,
then saw a flash of fire on the stage. The theater's pianist, Harry Mapes, jumped off his
seat, ran to the back door, and kicked it open. He then returned to his piano and resumed
playing. While he played he called out to the crowd, "Just take your time, people."
Amazingly, all 250 patrons were able to exit the theater unharmed. The Ottawa
Herald (March 1, 1917) attributed the orderly and safe evacuation to Mapes' music
which had a calming effect upon the crowd. When the last of the audience was safely out,
there was just enough time for Mapes and several other men to push the piano out the
door to safety.
In Ottawa, Kansas, it was Harry Mapes' music which calmed a potential storm of a disorderly exit. On the lake in our text, it was Jesus' voice which calmed the raging storm.
