"Feel better by saying a few kind words to yourself." That was the gist of an article I saw
while perusing the pages of a popular magazine. The author urged depressed, lonely
readers to remind themselves that they are powerful, beautiful, and creative. It's true that
people need to know of their potential -- all of us do have a lot going for us.
There's a down side to this approach, however. It puts the focus on us. The best way to feel better is to forget your own problems and be grateful for what God has given you. Consider what Philippians 4 teaches: "With thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God." A chief reason we get down is we concentrate on what we don't have instead of what we do have. Start each day thanking God for what he's given you and write a note of thanks to someone who's helped you. It won't be long before God and others will give you the affirmation you need.
