Fr. Jerzy Popielusko, a Polish priest supportive of the Solidarity movement, spoke out on behalf of the workers against injustices. His life was in danger as he received threats from the Polish government. But he was not afraid or deterred. In October 1982, he said, "We are called to the truth. We are called to be witnesses to the truth with all our lives ... let us be faithful to the truth ..." Two years later, he was kidnapped, beaten, gagged, and thrown into a river by men working for the Polish government against Solidarity. Fr. Jerzy was neither afraid to speak the truth he had received from God nor afraid to put his life on the line for it.
