Generally speaking, there are two kinds of Christian folks: those who live be the letter of the law, and those who live by the spirit of the law. Quite frankly, I've never felt really comfortable around the letter folks, and I feel I have just cause. They seem to me to come up short on grace and love, but they seem to be overstocked with "thou shalt nots" and judgment.
When I first accepted Jesus as my personal Lord and Savior, I was teaching in a public high school. During the early months after my conversion, I came into contact with a letter Christian who nearly caused me to give up my faith. Since we were both teachers, it was hard to avoid her.
At first, she was thrilled with my witness for the Lord, but then she began to tell me things a truly saved person would have to forsake. First it was my make-up, then my jewelry, then my frequent trips to the theatre. The list went on and on ad infinitum.
Thank God the spirit folks came along and rescued me!
Dottie Rambo said it all in her Gospel song:
Amazing grace shall always be my song of praise,
For it was grace that bought my liberty ...
Amen and amen.
