The great Italian scientist Galileo Galilei encountered fierce opposition from ecclesiastical authorities throughout his career. His discovery of the moons of Jupiter gave some of the first visual evidence for the Copernican theory of the universe, in one stroke moving the earth from the center of the universe to a secondary position as a planet revolving around the sun. A theological system which placed the human race at the apex of creation found itself deeply threatened by the new science. Charged with teaching heresy, Galileo was forced to renounce his work and to live under house arrest. Church authorities refused even to look at his evidence, accusing him of fabricating the so-
called moons. But the truth of Galileo's work could not be suppressed, and today we remember him as one of the most important figures in scientific history. -- Walker
