This great servant song from Second Isaiah was very important to Jesus, and probably an inspiration to him, so much so that he had it memorized. St. Matthew quotes it in chapter twelve, verses eighteen to twenty-one. It was chosen here to fit the Gospel story and baptismal theme, which is an epiphany of God in the humanity of the Incarnate One. Jesus, the second Joshua, was baptized at age thirty, probably in January, at the natural ford, el-Hajleh, near Bethabara, near where the first Joshua brought the children of Israel over the Jordan into the Promised Land. It was a deeply religious experience for Jesus, as witnessed by the first theophany. He entered the water, not for his sake, but for ours, as a foretaste of rebirth, hope, and eternal life. In our Baptism we are made a new Creation, we come to a new birth in water and the Holy Spirit. We who are the brothers and sisters of Christ have God say to us also, "This is my beloved." There is one Lord, one faith, one Baptism, one God who is Father, and one mission for all Christians ... the mission of Jesus to servanthood.
