A group of seminarians were part of an interim year in the lower east side of Manhattan. The purpose of the year was to learn about and experience the poverty of those in the ghetto. It was a high-risk area and in the course of the year their apartments were burglarized about a half dozen times and they were mugged many more times. In their conversations with each other they began to speak of those as "liberating experiences." They did not enjoy losing property or money, but they did realize that once it was gone, they didn't have to worry about it any more. Perhaps the blessing of those with less of what is normally valued is a clearer focus on what is important. If not, then is there a blessing?
