A group of soldiers were talking about the value of religion in a person's life. After considerable drinking, one soldier made a wager with a comrade who had expressed his faith and trust in God. "I'll bet you $20 that you can't go in and confess all your sins to the priest." The bet was accepted and with slurred speech the young man confessed every conceivable sin he could think of to the priest. When it came time for his penance, the priest suggested that he should go into the sanctuary, look up at the cross, and say: "All this you have done for me and I don't care." As the soldier stood before the cross, he began to say the words suggested by the priest. He could not finish the sentence. The love and sacrifice of Christ overpowered him. He recommitted his life to Christ. In the midst of his mockery and denial, Christ spoke to him in the silence of the cross. -- Reisen
