Guarantees come in all forms...

Guarantees come in all forms and fashions. My favorite, of course, is a lifetime guarantee. A friend of mine saw that the pen and pencil set in my pocket was well worn. I had gotten great mileage out of it. The silver was faded to dark brown; the cap was rusted. So he proposed to say that company would send me a new set if I just returned my worn one to them. I did that very thing, for the first time in my life. I had more than gotten my money's worth out of that set. But to think that the manufacturer of that pen and pencil set would actually put a lifetime guarantee on it seemed absurd to me. I just wanted to see how this little escapade would end. Sure enough, one day I received a brand-new set of fine, fine writing instruments with a thank-you note from the company. I could hardly believe my eyes. But, guess what? I won't own another company's pen and pencil set the rest of my life. I will always believe in the lifetime guarantee of that great company. There is another guarantee that is even greater than that one. Jesus guaranteed that when he went away to be with the Father, he would send us the Spirit of Truth. And in this case the guarantee is forever -- not just a lifetime. Jesus says that the world cannot know about this Spirit of Truth because it neither sees him nor knows him. But we know him. How do we know him? It is just like Jesus guaranteed it would be. He lives with us and in us. How can we not be grateful? In a former pastorate, there were some folks who made light of this Spirit of Truth. I had to hurt for them, for obviously they had never discovered the lifetime guarantee Jesus has sent to them. Have you discovered him?
