Helen has Alzheimer's Disease. Very slowly she is losing her memory and with it all connection with the present and all understanding of and planning for the future. Each day she is living more and more in her distant past. But her memories are not connected to the present. Helen has no sense of belonging. No idea of who her children or grandchildren are. She simply lives from day to day, sleeping, eating and walking. Helen's family is struggling to cope. Memories were always something they took for granted. Not any more. Now they know how memories bind us together, how memories help us to plan for the future and how they help us understand who and what we are now. Says Helen's daughter: "It's hard to continue loving someone when that love is no longer returned. I've come to realize that our memories are an integral part of our growing in love." -- Conroy
