How common it is for people to complain. Even those of us who purport to be part of the people of God become impatient when things do not go our way. We even begin to speak out against God.
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn writing out of 11 years of imprisonment in the Russian Gulag helps us to keep things in perspective. Having gone through harassment by the secret police, torture of body and mind and near starvation we would think that he would have plenty to complain about. Surely, anyone in his situation would become impatient and would become envious of others.
Nonetheless, Solzhenitsyn could sum up those incredibly difficult years by saying: "It is enough if you don't freeze in the cold and if thirst and hunger don't claw at your insides. If your back isn't broken, if your feet can walk, if both arms can bend, if both eyes see, and if both ears hear, then whom should you envy?"
