How do you come to...

How do you come to God when everyone assumes you're bad? Jericho's citizens assume
Zacchaeus is bad. However, he acknowledges to Jesus in the present (continuous) tense,
"Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded
anyone of anything, I pay back four times as much." Translators are also
prejudicial to Zacchaeus, usually translating these present tense verbs as future.
Zacchaeus has a difficult job of gathering taxes, a job someone has to do. He seems to say that even when he handles money that may be tainted by someone else's wrong, he tries to do what is right.
When everyone assumes you are basically bad, Jesus shows how you can be linked with God. Even your admirable struggling to do what is right doesn't allow you to find God. Since all people are lost even in their attempts to do what is right, Jesus finds even you.
