How valuable is familiarity with the scriptures? Another man and I rowed a borrowed boat between the trees along the banks of a flooded river. We were searching for the bodies of two women and a baby girl, swept away by the roiling muddy water when their car missed a curve and plunged over the steep bank. After the remains of the two sisters had been found (and all hope was lost for the child), the mother and father of the women reacted differently to their grief. The father kept to himself and brooded, often with a glass of bourbon in hand. The mother repeated over and over again the words of the Psalmist: "Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning" (Psalm 33:10). At some point she had memorized that verse, and now it became her spiritual and emotional lifeline.
