Human portraits come from many sources; camera pictures, video and cinematic shots, oils and watercolors and verbal descriptions. Computers have even enabled people to draw pictures of individuals and adjust the image to show how they might age! Certainly the thirst for knowing what Jesus himself looked like is still fostered in religious art and relics of all kinds. Every age paints a somewhat different Jesus who reflects the particular concerns and emphasis of that era.
But Isaiah's prophetic description of the coming Lord reveals little concern about Jesus' physical appearance. Instead his picture is painted with words about what the servant was going to do. From that we are free to construct our own mental image of a human being destined for abuse and pain.
But we see one who also brought redemption and a new humanity. Isaiah's picture of the suffering one is neither idealized nor obscure. It does not suffer the limitations of any given era. The reality of God's Messiah, designed by the prophet, offers sufficient sustenance for worship and action today.
