If I had been there...

If I had been there, if I had heard Jesus teach, if I had seen his miracles, if I had watched him die on a cross, I wonder if I would have believed. I wonder. Probably Jesus' teachings would have struck me as outrageous. What Messiah/liberationist would say, "Love your enemies"? What Messiah/patriot would say, "Whoever ... does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, even life itself, cannot be my disciple"? I would have regarded his miracles as evidence that he was a prophet, but not the Messiah. Whoever expected the Messiah to be like Elijah (miraculously feeding the hungry and raising the dead), or like Elisha (causing the waters to obey him)? I probably would have regarded his death as certain and final proof that he was in fact not the Messiah! After all, doesn't Deuteronomy 21:23 state that one who is hung on a tree is cursed of God? Besides, if Jesus were God's anointed, what possible purpose could his betrayal and crucifixion serve? Moreover, didn't everyone believe that the Messiah would remain forever (John 12:34)? No wonder Paul could later write, "We proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles" (v. 22)!
