"If someone steps on your foot, do not your lips complain? If someone strikes your body, does not your head protest?" Fulton Sheen used these homey illustrations to show that Christ is the head of the church. Sheen traced this imagery of the church as the Body of Christ to Paul. Under his Jewish name, Saul, he persecuted the church. On his way to Damascus, Saul saw a great light. He heard a voice, "Saul, Saul, why are you doing things against me (Acts 9:4, The Everyday Bible)?" Sheen asked, "Why does our Lord say me? He is in heaven. How can they persecute him?" Sheen used the examples above to show how Christ, the head of the Body, protested when the members of the Body were hurt.
