An Iowa newspaper contained this blooper: "There is a ninety percent chance of tomorrow."
When Jesus' disciples heard his prediction of the Temple's destruction, it must have seemed to them that the world was about to end.
Several years ago a cartoon depicted a scruffy, robed and bearded sidewalk prophet carrying a sign that read, "Bad news! The world is not coming to an end, and you'll have to cope!"
End of the world -- and all's over? Not the end -- and we'll have to endure?
Jesus' words hint at a third possibility. He defined the coming destruction and violence as "the beginning of the birthpangs" (v. 8). Not just an end, not just something to be endured, but the birth of something new and great.
