It is an accepted phenomenon that people who are on their deathbeds "choose" the time of their death. It is commonly noted that those approaching death seem to be able to hang on in order to see a grandchild get married, or to celebrate a birthday or a holiday such as Christmas, or in order to be able to say goodbye to friends and relatives who must travel a distance to get to their bedsides.
Many times we act as if we have no control, but even on the path to death those who are motivated seem to be able to hold off death for the time being. While we do not have a choice about whether we die, we can and do exercise some choice about how and when we die.
