Jeremiah is one of the most fascinating of the Hebrew prophets. His writings reveal more about his inner personal life, more about his doubts and fears and angers, than the writings of any other prophet. Jeremiah "let it all hang out."
Jeremiah was a man of dramatically varying moods. Sometimes his mood is one of great faith and exaltation, as when he says to God, "thy words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart (15:16)." But at other times the prophet's mood is one of dark anger as in the lectionary reading for today. It reveals a mood of seething frustration. "Lord, you have deceived me," he cries. And he goes on to blurt out that the very word of the Lord, which is his vocation to declare, has caused him to be ridiculed and scorned (20:8b). Jeremiah is ashamed of the word of God he proclaims. He is in a bad mood, and seems embarrassed by the excellence of the Word he proclaimed.
Are we ever embarrassed by excellence? According to a recent survey among the American people, a host of us are embarrassed by the ten commandments, since only 13 'percent of the populace still believes in all 10 (The Day America Told the Truth).
