Jesus asks James and John...

Jesus asks James and John if they were able to drink of the cup of suffering he was facing. Their reply became the basis for the hymn "Are Ye Able" by Earl Marlatt. Is there room for the suspicion that the self-assured answer the disciples gave and the one we sing is a bit too glib and shallow?
There is much to be said in favor of a positive, confident attitude regarding human performance. But given the disciples' dismal record of betrayal and our own record of weakness and compromise, perhaps the hymn needs a healthy dose of humility. It might then say that we are able with God's help!
