Jesus provides a righteousness that we, who lack any of our own, can borrow. The principle is much like borrowing from the reputation of one who, unlike us, may have more than enough to share.
Horace Greeley, the irascible founder and editor of the New York Tribune, was renowned for his almost unreadable handwriting. On one occasion he wrote a note to one of his employees, dismissing him from his position, claiming he had neglected his duties.
Years later the former employee crossed Greeley's path. The journalist told his former chief how useful the note had proved. "I took it with me," he explained. "Nobody could read it, so I declared it a letter of recommendation, gave it my own interpretation, and obtained several first-class situations by it. I am really very much obliged to you."
