Just as the paralytic's friends...

Just as the paralytic's friends came to his aid by bringing him to Jesus, so Paul Revere of Revolutionary War fame came to the aid of his neighbor. Deborah Sampson farmed nearby with her family, but times were difficult and she had slipped into poverty. Paul Revere sent a letter to his and her representative in Congress on her behalf to secure a military pension for her.
Her story is unique. Wanting to support the revolutionary cause for the colonies, Deborah disguised herself as a man and enlisted in the Continental Army as Robert Shurtliff. As a member of the Fourth Massachusetts Regiment, she became the first woman soldier to fight for her country. She was wounded in battle; but after her recovery, she returned to her regiment. Later, after a long march through blizzard conditions, she was hospitalized with pneumonia; but, after her recovery, she returned to her regiment to fight again. She was honorably discharged after the war.
Yet, she did not receive the pension promised to all veterans. That is, until Paul Revere stood by her and advocated to the right authorities to respond with kindness and generosity. His efforts were effective. Soon after, Congress added Deborah Sampson's name to the Massachusetts pension rolls and she was better provided for.
