Last summer, the Talbott family rode their bikes from coast to coast, from Oregon to
New Jersey, to raise awareness and support for the Alliance Defense Fund. ADF is a
Christian nonprofit organization with the goal of "defending the right to hear and speak
the truth."
They had a prayerful send-off from their home church in Pennsylvania, then flew to Oregon to begin their adventure. They faced obstacles on their trip; bad weather slowed them down as well as suffering between thirty and forty flat tires. One day, they experienced five flat tries in just seven miles. The family grew closer as a result of working through problems. "The greatest challenge was not getting discouraged when it felt like we were so far from home and knowing we still had a long way to go," the daughter explained.
The family discovered that people across the country are kind and helpful. People who did not know them would offer assistance or open their homes to them. The youngest daughter framed their experience, "It was amazing to see how God provided for us even in the small things." Every chance they had they talked about ADF and collected donations from strangers along the way.
It took the Talbott family 65 days to peddle across the country. They raised over $100,000 dollars for Alliance Defense Fund. This was one summer trip the family would not soon forget. The lessons they learned about themselves, their strength as a family, and their faith will last forever.
The apostle Paul knew it was true in his own life that "suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope."
