"Actions speak louder than words!" We've heard that saying so many times that we almost assume that it is a biblical one. While it isn't found in Scripture, it certainly has a great validity. The things that we do are usually more indicative of the kind of person that we are than the words that we utter.
When we think about God, however, that saying loses much of its meaning. With God, actions are not more important than words, nor are words more important than actions. For with God, the word is the action.
In the Book of Psalms we see that "by the word of the Lord, the heavens were made." That verse is based on several verses in the Book of Genesis where God said such things as, "Let there be light," followed by the words that "it was so" God's word is not separate from God's action. When God speaks, the action occurs.
This dramatic prologue to John's Gospel reveals the ultimate truth about God's word and activity. They are combined in their fullest expression in human flesh that actually dwelt among us. That is, God's Word is nothing less than Jesus Christ. And God's activity is nothing less than Jesus Christ. In the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we are able to see the major activity of God -- namely the forgiveness and reconciliation of humankind.
The Bible begins with the story of God's word creating the heavens and the earth. A new story can begin for each one of us when we realize the truth that God's word has created a new life for us all. God's word is love. Through that word, we are empowered to act in loving ways that speak loudly to the world!
