Yesterday our second son, Timmy, came home shouting, "The lights in the school went out today!" Quizzingly I asked further, "What did you do then?" He flippantly responded, "We were scared. The teacher had to really work at getting everybody calmed."
In a child's words came eternal truth. The work of the church or ministry is to calm down a world of scared people. In God's Word "... the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily,..." When the lights of living go out we become frightened: When marriage loses its shining rays; when the glow of friendliness is darkened by withdrawal; when the bright life of living is shortened by disease or death; when the lustrous salary is opaqued by unemployment.
Permeating before, during and after our world is God as expressed through the Word, Jesus as the Christ. The assurance (the light of our understanding) is that God is everywhere. He is the answer to everything. He was even in human form as the Man of Nazareth, God with us. As such he was before the world began; apart from and yet at one with God; became the source of the creative process; and became flesh, a man.
From God, through Jesus as the Christ, passed on through the church (as ministry), the light continues to be! "And from his fullness have we all received, grace upon grace." (verse 16)
