I once heard a speaker say that "Love your neighbor as yourself" is not so much a commandment as it is a statement of fact. The three loves of self, God, and neighbor are integrally interrelated. One is not possible without the others. The person who said "Whoever loves God must love him whom God loves" was right! Equally true is the fact that whoever loves his neighbor must also (first) love himself. I do not mean conceit, egotism, or selfishness. I mean healthy self-respect. I mean having a sense of self worth. Unless a person has that, he or she will be incapable of loving others. He or she will be too preoccupied with insecurities, rejections, slights, self-doubts -- to be free to love others. He or she will be working too hard at defense mechanisms, competing with others and putting others down in a desperate attempt to elevate the person's own self worth. But, the persons who know they are loved and forgiven by God, have special and unique gifts or talents, and have a "sane" estimate of self (good and bad) will be free to reach out to others in love.
