It was a cold night in November when we drove home after the High School retreat. The driving wind seemed to cut right through the car's heat. Gusts of wind pushed the stationwagon first one way and then the other on the slippery road. Suddenly, the driver slammed on the brakes. The car slid to a stop at the edge of the road.
Looking ahead, we could see nothing but a farmer's field. In the brightness of the headlights we could see that the road turned to the left, but the driver had been turning to the right. He slowly backed the car up, and then we saw the problem. There, flashing in our headlights was a sign on the left side of the road indicating a turn. Now we could see that the sign had been twisted by the wind. What had been intended as a safety sign to prevent accidents became a hazard because it had been turned around. Many things in life are meant for our benefit, but become harmful when their meaning or value becomes twisted. Not the least of these things is wealth.
