Many attorneys hesitate to let their clients testify in their own defense. Some may do so because they fear their clients are guilty and will incriminate themselves. Others do not let their clients "take the stand" because, although they are sure they are not guilty, the clients may be of such timid character and shy about speaking for themselves, that they could do little to convince a judge or jury of their innocence.
Fortunately for us, history gives us some great examples of people of strength and courage who have witnessed to what they believed to be true in a convincing manner, changing popular opinion and, in some cases, saving their own lives. Polycarp of Smyrna and Martin Luther before the Diet at Worms are but two who come to mind. Such personal witness comes not merely out of the person on trial, but from the principles upon which they have based their lives. Devotion to their Lord and his Holy Word sustained the witness of many. So it was also with Jeremiah.
