But the marks of pathos and suffering were on that face. "He was not comely ..." Seeing the glory is transfigured seeing. Albrecht Durer's close friend worked as a carpenter to support Durer in his art studies. The plan called for the friend's turn to come later. (The friend also aspired to being an artist.) But that turn never came. One day Durer saw his friend's gnarled hands clasped in prayer and he understood the meaning of his friend's sacrifice. Those gnarled hands were seen as beautiful hands. So, Durer put them on canvas. That is transfigured seeing.
