In Mere Christianity, C. S. Lewis shows rather clearly why God had to become a man in order to save us. His thoughts might be summarized this way: If you were to try to make friends with a wild animal, the initiative to gain its confidence would have to be entirely yours, for a wild animal will not come to you, but will run away. If, however, you move up a scale and wish to be friends with another human being, then there has to be a mutual initiative and responsibility. Otherwise, the friendship will not develop. If you then move one scale higher, and you wish to become a friend of God, you find that it is no longer your initiative at all. Now it is God's initiative alone. If he does not choose to show himself to you, you cannot begin to have a relationship with him. The story of Christmas is the wonderful news that God chose to show himself to us in the person of Jesus Christ, that we might have eternal life with him.
