In my first pastorate, a bright, intelligent high school girl came to my study. She wanted to become a missionary. But when she expressed her desire to her parents, they insisted that she give up such a silly notion. They were solid members of the congregation, participating in all of the church activities. They believed in missions: they supported missions with their prayers and their money. But they had no enthusiasm for the mission enterprise to become so personal. It might hurt. They might lose their daughter. They might not see her for years. -- Keller
