A new member of a synod staff was leading a worship service in one of the congregations of the Synod. As the guests and members were being greeted, one person politely said, "So, you are the new assistant to the Bishop. I only have one question to ask you. 'Do you believe that Jonah was swallowed by a whale?' " Immediately the response was given: "I assume you believe in a literal interpretation of the Scriptures." "I sure do, and all true Christians should, too." Without hesitating, the Bishop's assistant replied: "Madam, would you happen to have more than one coat and some extra food in your home?" "Well, of course I do," came the answer. "Then I would suggest you fulfill the words of Scripture which tell us, 'Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do the same'; and by the way, perhaps you should ask yourself to what Ninevehs God is trying to send you." John the Baptist challenged people to change, to live differently. He called it repentance. God's love in Jesus Christ not only frees us to become new creations, but also challenges us to love and to share with others as the redeemed people of God. A faith active in love proclaims loudly to others that Jesus Christ is Lord. -- Reisen
