Our lesson urges us to make the most of our time (v. 16). Americans do not do that very well. A 2007 study by Canadian Psychologist Piers Steele found that 26% of the American public view themselves as procrastinators. Founder of Pennsylvania William Penn once wrote: "Time is what we want most, but what we use worst." And Irish actor Dion Boucicault wrote, "Men talk of killing time, while time quietly kills them." There is redemption from this time wasting; God's love sets us out to do exciting things.
The late medieval English mystic Julian of Norwich offers a comforting explanation of how God gets us away from this squandering of time: "The love of God never allows His chosen ones to lose time, for all their trouble is turned into endless joy..." (The Revelation of Divine Love, p.172).
