My wife's family has some German in their background, so after I married her I was introduced to the tradition of having sauerkraut for New Year's Day. The idea was that it was supposed to bring you good fortune for the year, although I doubt many people put a lot of faith in that. However, coupled with some kielbasa, it at least gave you a tasty dish to start the year!
This is just one of many traditions all around the world meant to observe the end of the old year and the beginning of the new. For the Israelites, the event that would mark this passage of years was meant to be a different kind of celebration: a memorial commemorating the deliverance of Israel from slavery. It marked the end of the old era of subjugation and the beginning of a new life of freedom for this nation: "This month shall be for you the beginning of months. It shall be the first month of the year for you" (v. 2).
